So that people of all ages can compete in this race on a more or less equitable basis some runners are allowed to begin the race before others. The following table indicates how many Headstart minutes each entrant will receive based on gender and age. Headstart minutes are based on years of historical data of actual times and records of male and female runners. Compiled and interpreted by "Birdman", the race's official handicapper, the information is presented to the committee for review annually. Typically at least eight of the ten top finishers have been from different handicap groups.
There are no changes to the 2012 head start minutes for men and women. The head start minutes used in 2012 will be applied in 2013.
The continuing "1-1-1" system of winner penalties, by which each Dipsea winner is penalized one minute for the ensuing three years, will remain in place for 2013. If they enter the 2013 Dipsea Race, one minute penalty will apply to the following runners: Hans Schmid (2012 winner); Jamie Rivers (2011 winner); and Reilly Johnson (2010) winner.
No change will be made to the 25 minute maximum head start, with a 2 minute gap between the Invitational and Dipsea Runner sections.
