DIPSEA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
GENERAL INFORMATION

The Dipsea Foundation provides annual scholarship opportunities based on criteria determined by it's Board of Directors. The number of the scholarships, dollar awards and qualifications are set by the Board and may change from year to year. On June 6, 1997 the Foundation will award two scholarships, one each to a boy and girl. Each scholarship will be in the amount of $1000.

Financial Need, Essay, Community Service/Leadership, Athletic Performance and Scholarship Application Presentation are the criteria by which applications will be judged. Only students with outstanding merit will have a chance to win our awards.

1997 SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

(Applicants must meet ALL of the following qualifications):

1. For High School Seniors Only. These scholarships are open to students in the graduating class of a high school located in Marin County, California; or students in the graduating class of a high school located outside Marin County, California, who have officially entered and finished or volunteered for an Annual Dipsea Race prior to submitting this application.

2. All applicants must be citizens of the United States of America on the date the application is submitted.

3. All applicants must be active participants in their high school's track & field or cross county running program.

4. 1997 Applications must be received by the Dipsea Foundation no later than May 1, 1997.

 

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

1. Applicants must use the numbered 1997 DIPSEA FOUNDATION OFFICIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FORM. No photocopies are permitted.

2. The Applicant Questionnaire and Verification must be completed and signed by the student, school official and a parent or guardian.

3. Typewritten applications are preferred.

4. The application and all supporting documentation must be in the English language.

5. All documentation must be on one side of 81/2" x 11" sized paper. Supporting documentation (letters, etc.) must be originals.

6. Applicants must submit a transcript of high school grades and college entrance test scores (SAT or ACT).

7. The parent or guardian's financial statement must be notarized.

8. The complete application, including attached documentation cannot exceed 20 pages (one side only).

9. All applications must be properly bound on the left side with hinges or staples in a standard binder or cover.

10. The scholarship winners will be announced at the Dipsea Foundation Hall of Fame Dinner which will be held on Friday, June 6, 1997 and presented at the Awards Ceremony held at 12:30pm at Stinson Beach Park following the Annual Dipsea Race on Sunday June 8, 1997.

11. All applications become the property of the Dipsea Foundation and will not be returned to the applicant. Please make a copy of your application for your records prior to submittal.

12. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of award issued by the Dipsea Foundation and conditioned upon the enrollment of the student in an undergraduate four year degree program in an accredited US American college or university. Upon our receipt of a "Verification of Enrollment" form from the proper school officials, a Dipsea Foundation check in the amount of the award will be forwarded to the college or university to establish a credit for the student.

13. We require a social security number for our records. Your social security number will be held in confidence, except as we are required to report to schools and government tax authorities. If you do not have a social security number you should immediately apply for one.

 

APPLICATION ORDER

The application must be arranged and submitted in the following order:

1. Official Dipsea Foundation Application Form. To be completed in it's entirety. Attach Applicant Questionnaire and Verification.

2. Essay. The applicant is to prepare an essay based on the Annual Dipsea Race. There are no other limitations on the subject matter. As reference the applicant may wish to obtain copies of the books The Dipsea Race by Mark Reese and Dipsea - The Greatest Race, by Barry Spitz. The maximum length of the essay is 500 words.

6. Current dated, original, signed letter of recommendation from a high school authority at school attended by applicant. Letters should be no more than one page and cover the applicant's work habits, leadership, athletic participation, personality and integrity. Applicant should have at least one letter, but no more than three.

7. Letters of endorsement from responsible community members (non-school). These persons should not be related to the applicant. They should be capable of describing the applicant's participation in community service, leadership, notable skills, and athletic achievements. Each letter should be typed and no more than one page. Applicant should have at least two letters but no more than four.

8. Applicant's statement of participation in the Annual Dipsea Race. If participation was as a runner include year(s) of participation, times, places, and any awards. If participation as a race volunteer include year(s) of participation, position worked, and description of volunteer work. Participation in the Annual Dipsea Race as a runner or race day volunteer is highly encouraged by the Dipsea Foundation.

9. Copies of any of applicants awards for scholarship, leadership, athletics, community service or other related activities.

 

SCORING SYSTEM

All applications are judged on a point system. Points are awarded in five general categories, Financial Need, Essay, Community Service/Leadership, Athletic Performance, and Application Content & Presentation. The judges will consist of the Board of Directors of the Dipsea Foundation and other appointed members of the community. All decisions of the judges are final and not subject to appeal.

The total maximum attainable points for any applicant is 1000. The maximum points in each category are as follows:
